Led by Clint Ashlock, the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra will present a brand new arrangement of Mary Lou Williams’s (1910-1981) Zodiac Suite in its entirety. This iconic piece was first recorded in 1945, but fell into relative obscurity for 60 years before being revived in 2006 by a combo formed in Williams’s honor. Ashlock’s arrangement of the piece for big band is one of the only of its kind, and pays tribute to Williams, a longtime Kansas City resident and one of the greatest jazz composers, arrangers and bandleaders of the 20th century.
