Roeland Park, KS

An assistant professor of Filmmaking and Creative Writing at the Kansas City Art Institute, Trey Hock explores narrative through short film, writing, installation, photography, performance and web-based social media platforms. His work investigates physical and social constructions that surround us, including narrative storytelling, the photographic frame, public and private space, and personal identity. Hock is collaborating with writer Brent Jackson to explore the taxonomy of the recently decommissioned Blue River Road.

Blue River Road Investigators

Medium: Polaroids, Found Objects, Paper, Photos, and Ephemera

One does not need to be an archaeologist or natural scientist to pinpoint nearby areas of recent human settlement and habitation that, once abandoned, revert slowly but inevitably to what we like to label a ‘natural’ state. Although Kansas City’s Blue River Road is not quite an example of such a radical shift in functional identity, because of a combination of natural factors that closed the road to through traffic in 2011, its current status is as two smaller, foreshortened roads that service a few local points before terminating abruptly at large roadblocks. This has created not only a series of unintended ‘liminal' zones, but also new and more refined hiking and biking trails, laid out to capitalize on the likelihood that the pre-2011 Blue River Road will never return. The adaptive ecosystem brought about by the road’s extended closure has in turn attracted the attention of local artists and writers Trey Hock and Brent Jackson, both of whom explore various forms of narrative across a broad range of creative media. In recent months, Hock and Jackson have adhered to a research plan that has brought them back repeatedly to Blue River Road to observe and report on the changes in the natural landscape as well as the social networks that emerge over time when a roadway that once served hundreds — if not thousands — of trucks and automobiles per day now sees none at all. While investigating how the various physical and social conditions that surround Blue River Road have ended up defining how such public and private spaces are utilized (or avoided) by the rest of us, the artists have also established a working protocol for assisting both accompanied and unaccompanied groups to this new and uncharted place where Blue River Road used to run.
