Waterfall As Cinema

Denis
Rodriguez
and
Leonardo
Remor

Porto Alegre, Brazil

Based in Porto Alegre, this Brazilian duo has been collaborating since 2009, most visibly as co-founders of the experimental Galeria Peninsula, which emphasizes digital art. Their work investigates the space of nature within the logic of urban development, and in that spirit, their Kansas City installation consists of a single-channel video projection of a waterfall pouring down a set of public stairs, suggesting an illusion of both disaster and redemption.

Denis Rodriguez and Leonardo Remor

Waterfall as Cinema

Medium: Projection

Like its title, this illusionistic video loop of water falling aspires to fool the visitor, if only for a split second, into believing that it’s real. Based in Porto Alegre, Brazilian artists Denis Rodriguez and Leonardo Remor have been collaborating since 2009, most visibly as co-founders of the experimental Galeria Peninsula, which emphasizes contemporary digital fine art. Their artworks investigate the space of nature within the logic of urban development, and in that spirit, their second recent exhibition in Kansas City is in the form of an installation in which a single-channel projection of water cascading down a set of public stairs poses a scenario of both disaster and redemption, which resolves itself upon prolonged viewing to a nearly meditative calm of acceptance.
