A Brazilian artist who works with the traditional process of casting sculpture in bronze to give shape to his emblematic figures, Flávio Cerqueira creates figurative works that offer narratives within an atmosphere of direct engagement with the spectator. The sculptures are often presented as tableaux, in which the figure interacts directly with his environment. Cerqueira was resident artist at Kansas City Art Institute during summer 2018, when he hand-built his Open Spaces sculpture, Any Word Except Wait, which marks the first time he has shown his art publicly in the U.S.

A young woman strides confidently across the campus lawn, her gaze directed straight ahead toward the exit of the university and the infinite challenges and possibilities waiting for her in the greater world outside. Her mind on classes, she seems almost unaware of the stack of textbooks balanced perfectly on her head, as if the ability to do so while moving purposefully toward her goal is no big deal, anyone can do it. The subject of Any Word but Wait is a fictitious persona, hand-built in Kansas City by Brazilian sculptor Flávio Cerqueira, who with this work is exhibiting in the U.S. for the first time.
Cerqueira, who lives in Sâo Paulo, works with the traditional process of casting bronze in a mold to give shape to his emblematic figures. Based loosely on himself as a subject, Cerqueira’s figurative works offer open-ended narratives within an atmosphere of direct engagement with the spectator. The sculptures are often presented as tableaux in which the figure seems to merge effortlessly with her environment. Cerqueira produced Any Word but Wait during a two-month artist residency at Kansas City Art Institute during May and June 2018, and cast the sculpture at Ad Astra Art Bronze, Lawrence, KS.
