Medium: Paintings
Most fine art painting requires the artist to create or arrangezones of relatively wet pigment and medium mixed together, which later dry in such a way as to not draw attention to their earlier state of wetness. Kansas City artist Martin Cail has a somewhat different approach, which is to at least partly convince us that the paintings we’re looking at are still wet. Following years experimenting with various attempts to imitate the rich textures, colors and edges found in everyday sensorial interactions with the world, Cail came up with a suspension technique that employs ink and pigment washes mixed with various solvents to create luminous, swirling effects. The fluidity of the materials, process and technique produces curves and billows reminiscent of the human body and of nature at both a macro and micro level. Cail custom crafts his own inks and tools to develop a direct visual impact that blends his formal interests in stained glass, ceramic glazes and watercolor with more meaningful aspects of science and spirituality.
