Deep States

Medium: Aluminum/Steel

Political boundaries make for inherent complications in the way we traverse the spaces of our daily lives, even when such demarcations are reduced over time to abstractions that seem unworthy of our attention.State Line Road, which runs alongside Westwood Park, is crossed daily by countless drivers and pedestrians who never give it a second thought. In a wry dialogue with its location, Kansas City artist Michael Schonhoff’s sculpture Deep States offers subtle commentary on the conundrum of a metro area divided between two different states, while directing a critical gaze at how geographic boundaries fundamentally distort the lived reality of collective societies and shared resources. With a creative practice that includes the roles of director, curator, artist and musician, Michael Schonhoff is co-founder of the artists’ studio initiative Kunstraum KC, and currently serves as the director of KCAI Crossroads Gallery.
