Never Records

Never
Records/Ted
Riederer

New York, NY

New York artist and musician Ted Riederer launched Never Records in 2010 as part of a collaborative project with curators No Longer Empty in the former sales floor of Tower Records’ fabled East Village flagship store. One year later, Never Records had expanded to become a mobile record-making lab, using recording equipment and a vinyl record lathe to cut two, four-minute records on the spot for whoever walks in the door (one copy stays behind in the fast-growing library).

Never Records/Ted Riederer

Never Records

Medium: Tables and Recording Equipment

As described by the BBC during its iteration as part of the 2010 Liverpool Biennial, “Never Records is a mock record shop that only stocks vinyl that has been cut in the store itself. Using microphones and a specialized vinyl-cutting turntable at one end of the 'store', New York artist Ted Riederer has been recording musicians on the spot before giving them freshly-pressed 12-inch recordings of their songs.” Launched by Riederer in January 2010 as part of a collaborative project with curators No Longer Empty on the former sales floor of Tower Records’ fabled East Village flagship store, Never Records’ mission is to serve as catalyst for the unlimited potential possessed by a record store and in-house label — fictitious or not — to unite, educate and uplift a community and celebrate its existing cultural resources through the technological marvel of recorded sound. Since almost nothing at Never Records is actually for sale — musicians receive their recordings for free — Riederer is able to get to the core of what it means to promote and preserve our shared musical heritage, which in Kansas City also includes lending heightened visibility to its existing bounty of vinyl record stores.
