Nick
Cave

Chicago, IL

Missouri native Nick Cave has become an iconic figure in American art over the past 10 years, with work that straddles boundaries of sculpture, dance, video and even architecture. Cave received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and his BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute. His sprawling 2017 installation at Mass MoCA and his 2018 exhibition at the Frist Art Museum in Nashville have been among the most widely praised exhibitions of recent memory. Cave’s Open Spaces project, Hy-Dyve, adapts one of his site-specific video works to Hope Center KC’s decommissioned church/community space.

Nick Cave

Hy-Dyve

Medium: Projections

Nick Cave, a Missouri native and alumnus of Kansas City Art Institute, is one of the most prominent visual artists working in the US today. His expansive art straddles traditional boundaries of sculpture, dance, video and even architecture — all of which figure prominently into Hy-Dyve, his installation at Hope Center. Making use of all available surface areas on the floors and walls of this former Catholic church to create a wraparound video image, Cave’s vision engulfs the viewer in a cascade of shifting images and sounds: the artist’s eyes peering out through a mask of his own creation (one of his signature Soundsuits), dark waters swirling around the viewer’s feet, a gentle percussive rhythm filling the space. The artist leaves unanswered the question of what is actually happening in the video, although the work suggests the feeling of claustrophobia and alludes to such key historical junctures such as the Middle Passage, during which countless Africans were transported to the New World as slave labor. Cave, who is Chicago-based, received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, MI.
