Supercolonies: The Ant, the Serpent, and the Mount

Medium: Glass and Painting

Biodiversity in nature often leads to the coexistence of strange bedfellows, as seen in the case of certain giant anthills in India, where snakes also make their homes in a symbiotic arrangement that protects the ants from their rodent predators. This mutually beneficial  relationship is mirrored in this sculptural installation by the artist Rina Banerjee, who was born in Calcutta, India and raised in London, England, and received a degree in Polymer Engineering, working as a research chemist before enrolling in the MFA program at Yale University, which she completed in 1996. Since that time, Banerjee’s ingenuity in combining a wide range of forms and materials has brought her considerable public and critical attention, resulting in exhibitions of her work in numerous recent international survey exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale and Prospect.4 New Orleans, both in 2017. Banerjee’s art will be the subject of a survey exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia later this year.
