Breathing Room

Shinique
Smith

Brooklyn, NY

A New York-and Los Angeles-based painter and sculptor known for colorful installation art and paintings that incorporate found textiles and various collage materials, Shinique Smith is consistently inspired by the vast nature of the ‘things’ we consume and discard, which resonate for her on a personal and social scale. In keeping with her interest in the working process, Smith has prepared Breathing Room, a large site-specific denim sculpture for Kansas City that is designed to come into being as the result of a group-based collaborative effort.

Shinique Smith

Breathing Room

Medium: Lee Jeans

This installation by the multimedia artist Shinique Smith, who is known for colorful site-specific sculptures and assembled paintings that incorporate found textiles and various collage materials, functions in part as the simulation of a factory that specializes in denim, and as a site of healing and refuge. In keeping with a longstanding commitment to position her own working process at the foreground of the final product, Smith has prepared a large site-specific denim sculpture for Kansas City that is designed to come into being as the result of a group-based collaborative effort, which is punctuated regularly by performances and demonstrations of yogic breathing and chant-based vocalization. Smith, who is based in Los Angeles and New York, is consistently inspired by the expansive potential of the things we consume and discard, which resonate for her on both a personal and social scale.
