Draped Form

Jacob
Burmood

Ottawa, KS

A relatively recent arrival to the Kansas City area where he is a member of the art faculty at Johnson County Community College, sculptor Jacob Burmood recently opened a rural Kansas studio where he produces ceramics and sculptures. His focus is large-scale outdoor work, and his most recent piece, Draped Form, appears at the entrance in Swope Park as part of Open Spaces, suggesting both the Hellenistic Winged Victory of Samothrace and the draped, expressionistic figures in Auguste Rodin.

Jacob Burmood

Draped Form

Medium: Metal and Steel

Since antiquity, the human form draped by a cloak or robe has attracted sculptors, in part because of the technical challenge it poses. To capture the billowing folds of cloth in a material like stone or metal is practically the definition of mimesis — physically altering one material so that it it begins to resemble another. Jacob Burmood’s artistic focus is large-scale outdoor work, and Draped Form marks the entrance of Swope Park with a semi-abstract mass of curves and ripples that suggests both the Hellenistic Winged Victory of Samothrace and the bronzes of Auguste Rodin. Burmood is a relatively recent arrival to the Kansas City area, where he’s a member of the art faculty at Johnson County Community College, and recently opened a rural Kansas studio, where he produces ceramics and sculptures.
